Minimum deviation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007311

The smallest angle of deflection that a ray of light undergoes when passing through a prism. In atmospheric optics, this principle applies to the formation of phenomena like rainbows and halos, where light is refracted and dispersed by water droplets or ice crystals. The angle of minimum deviation is specific to the refractive index of the medium and the prism's geometry.
