Newton

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007531

The standard unit of force in the International System of Units (SI), defined as the force required to accelerate a mass of one kilogram at a rate of one meter per second squared. In atmospheric science, forces such as the pressure gradient force, Coriolis force, and frictional force are expressed in newtons per unit mass or volume. One newton is approximately equal to 0.225 pounds of force.
