Pavlovsky's approximation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007824

A simplified treatment of steady seepage through an earth dam resting on an impervious base, introduced by Pavlovsky in 1931. It divides the flow region into three zones, treats the flow as horizontal in the two outer zones and as Dupuit-type flow in the middle one, and equates the discharge across the zones. Solving the resulting equations gives the discharge and the height where the free surface meets the downstream face.
