Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007865

A large-scale, semi-stationary low-pressure system that remains over a specific geographic area for extended periods, particularly during certain seasons. These systems are centers of cyclonic activity, associated with ascending air, cloud formation, and frequent precipitation. The Icelandic Low and the Aleutian Low are prominent examples that influence weather patterns across the North Atlantic and North Pacific, respectively, especially during winter.
