The complete set of all possible measurements or outcomes that are of interest in a statistical study. In meteorology, a population could be all the temperature readings at a specific station over a 30-year period or all the hailstones produced by a particular storm. Samples are drawn from the population to make inferences about its overall characteristics, such as its mean or variance.
