Random sample

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010715

A subset of data points or observations selected from a larger atmospheric dataset in such a way that every possible sample of the chosen size has an equal probability of being selected. This method is used in climatology and atmospheric research to make statistical inferences about the entire dataset or population without analyzing every single data point. For example, a random sample of 30 years of daily temperature data might be used to estimate long-term climate variability.
