Random variable

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008394

A variable whose possible values are numerical outcomes of a random phenomenon. In atmospheric science, this could represent quantities like daily maximum temperature, precipitation amount, or wind gust speed, where the exact value is uncertain before observation. Each random variable is associated with a probability distribution that describes the likelihood of its possible values.
