Pop-up thunderstorm
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008062
A single-cell thunderstorm that develops in a weakly-forced environment, driven primarily by daytime solar heating of the surface. These storms form in warm, moist air masses with little vertical wind shear, leading to a short lifespan as their own downdraft and rain-cooled outflow cut off the updraft. They are a common occurrence during summer afternoons in many mid-latitude and subtropical locations.
