Degrees of freedom

The number of independent pieces of information available to estimate a parameter or the number of independent variables in a statistical model. In atmospheric science, this concept is applied in statistical analyses of climate data and in the design of experiments. For a sample of size 'n', the degrees of freedom for estimating the population variance is typically 'n-1'.
