Degrees of freedom

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002956

The number of independent values or quantities that are free to vary in a statistical calculation or a physical system. In statistics, it relates to the number of independent pieces of information available to estimate a parameter or calculate a statistic. For a sample of 'n' observations, the degrees of freedom for the sample variance is typically n-1.
