Radiation belts

Regions of energetic charged particles, primarily protons and electrons, trapped by the Earth's magnetic field. These belts, known as the Van Allen belts, extend from a few hundred to many thousands of kilometers above the Earth's surface. They pose a hazard to spacecraft and astronauts.
