Rainband
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008373
An elongated, narrow area of precipitation, either rain or snow, that is significantly longer than it is wide. These structures are visible on weather radar and are associated with specific meteorological phenomena, such as the spiral arms of a tropical cyclone or the leading edge of a cold front. Rainbands in a hurricane can produce intense rainfall and strong, gusty winds, and are separated by areas of weaker precipitation.
