Refraction of water waves

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008479

The phenomenon where water waves change direction as they propagate into areas of different water depth. As waves enter shallower water, their speed decreases, and their crests tend to align parallel to the bottom contours. This process concentrates wave energy on headlands and disperses it in bays.
