Double refraction

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005107

The optical phenomenon where a ray of light entering an anisotropic material splits into two distinct rays, each traveling at a different velocity and polarized in mutually perpendicular planes. This occurs in certain crystals and can be observed in atmospheric optics when light passes through ice crystals with specific orientations. It is responsible for some complex halo phenomena and other optical displays in the atmosphere.
