Double layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010481
A structure within a plasma consisting of two thin, parallel layers of opposite net electric charge. This charge separation creates a localized, strong electric field and a sharp drop in electric potential across the layer. In the upper atmosphere, double layers form in the ionosphere and magnetosphere, where they are capable of accelerating charged particles, such as the electrons that precipitate into the polar regions to create auroras.
