Double diffusive convection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005106
A type of fluid instability and mixing process driven by the differential diffusion rates of two distinct properties, such as heat and salinity in the ocean, or heat and a chemical species in the atmosphere. When one property is stabilizing and the other is destabilizing, convection can occur in the form of layered structures or fingers. This process is relevant to ocean stratification and atmospheric chemistry.
