Diffusive convection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005014
A form of convection driven by differences in the molecular diffusion rates of two or more properties, such as heat and salinity in the ocean, or heat and a trace gas in the atmosphere. This process can lead to the formation of layered structures in a fluid, even when the overall density profile is stable. It is a mechanism for vertical transport in stably stratified environments.
