Screening layer

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008709

A thin layer in the atmosphere or ionosphere where electric fields are significantly reduced or 'screened' due to the redistribution of charged particles. This phenomenon occurs when free charges move in response to an applied electric field, effectively neutralizing it within the layer. In the ionosphere, screening layers can form at the boundaries of plasma regions, influencing radio wave propagation.
