Double refraction
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001147
The splitting of a single incident light ray into two distinct rays as it passes through an anisotropic material, each traveling at a different velocity and having different polarization. This phenomenon, also known as birefringence, is observed in certain minerals and can be used to identify them under a polarizing microscope. In seismic exploration, analogous effects occur with shear waves in anisotropic media.
