Sand wall

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008643

The leading edge of a large, intense dust storm, known as a haboob, which appears as a towering, opaque wall of sand and dust. This phenomenon is created by the strong outflow winds, or gust front, from a collapsing thunderstorm which lifts massive amounts of loose sediment from the ground. These walls of dust can reach heights of several thousand feet and advance at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour, drastically reducing visibility.
