Sand whirl
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008644
A rapidly rotating column of air that lifts loose sand and dust from the ground, forming a visible vortex. These phenomena occur in arid or semi-arid regions under clear skies and light winds, driven by intense surface heating that creates strong convection. Unlike tornadoes, sand whirls are not associated with thunderstorms and are generally harmless, with diameters ranging from a few meters to tens of meters.
