Sea surface temperature

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008720

  1. The temperature of the water at the top layer of the ocean, typically measured within the first few meters of the surface. It is a key variable in weather forecasting and climate modeling, influencing air-sea interactions, atmospheric circulation, and the formation of tropical cyclones. Measurements are obtained from satellites using infrared radiometers, as well as from in-situ platforms like buoys and ships, which provide bulk temperature readings at a depth of approximately one meter.

  2. The term refers to the mean temperature of the ocean in the upper few meters.
