semi-Lagrangian method

A numerical advection scheme used in atmospheric models that traces parcels of air backward in time from grid points to determine their origin. This method allows for larger time steps than Eulerian advection schemes, improving computational efficiency. It is widely used in global and regional weather forecasting models.
