Semiarid climate

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008785

A climate type characterized by low annual precipitation that is insufficient to support dense forests but greater than that of a true desert. These regions, also known as steppes, experience potential evapotranspiration that exceeds mean annual precipitation. Under the Köppen climate classification system, semiarid climates are designated as BSk (cold steppe) or BSh (hot steppe), depending on their average annual temperature.
