Submesoscale coherent vortices
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009345
Small, rotating fluid structures in the ocean with horizontal scales ranging from hundreds of meters to a few kilometers. These vortices maintain their integrity over several rotation periods, transporting water properties such as heat, salt, and nutrients. They are observed through satellite altimetry and in-situ measurements.
