Suborbital track
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009346
The projection onto the Earth's surface of the trajectory of a vehicle, such as a sounding rocket, that travels into space but does not achieve sufficient velocity to complete an orbit. These flights follow a ballistic path, ascending to a high altitude before descending back to the surface. Suborbital tracks are planned for atmospheric research missions to collect in-situ data at altitudes inaccessible to balloons but below those of orbiting satellites.
