Synoptic situation

The large-scale atmospheric conditions prevailing over a broad geographical area at a given time. This includes the arrangement of high and low-pressure systems, fronts, and air masses that influence weather patterns across continents or ocean basins. Meteorologists analyze the synoptic situation using weather maps and data from a network of observing stations.
