Tail Doppler radar
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009489
A specialized Doppler radar system mounted on the tail section of an aircraft, designed to measure wind velocities and precipitation within atmospheric phenomena from an airborne platform. This allows for detailed observations of storm structures, such as hurricanes or severe thunderstorms, that are difficult to access from ground-based radars. Data collected provides high-resolution three-dimensional wind fields.
