Total scattering cross section
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009722
A measure of the overall effectiveness of a particle or molecule in scattering incident electromagnetic radiation, encompassing all directions. It represents the hypothetical area that, if perfectly opaque, would intercept the same amount of radiation as is scattered by the actual particle. This value is expressed in units of area, such as square meters.
