Trade-wind cumulus
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009742
Shallow, fair-weather cumulus clouds that form within the trade wind belts over tropical oceans. They are characterized by their flattened appearance and are arranged in organized lines or patterns parallel to the wind direction. These clouds form in a stable marine boundary layer capped by a strong temperature inversion, known as the trade-wind inversion, which limits their vertical development to below about 2 kilometers.
