Turbidity maximum
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009837
A zone within an estuary or river where the concentration of suspended sediment is highest. This phenomenon results from the interaction of freshwater and saltwater flows, which creates a region of reduced current velocity and enhanced flocculation of fine particles. The turbidity maximum is dynamic and can shift with tidal cycles and river discharge.
