Turning latitude

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009852

The latitude at which a tropical cyclone moving poleward and westward begins to curve back toward the east. This recurvature occurs as the storm is steered by the large-scale atmospheric flow, moving from the influence of the trade winds to that of the mid-latitude westerlies. The exact turning latitude for any given storm depends on the position and strength of subtropical high-pressure systems and approaching mid-latitude troughs.
