Variable visibility

An atmospheric condition reported when the prevailing visibility is not representative of the entire horizon circle. This situation occurs when visibility in one or more sectors is markedly different from the average, for example due to localized fog or precipitation. In aviation weather reports (METAR), variable visibility is noted in the remarks section, specifying the minimum and maximum visibility observed.
