Virtual impactor

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010026

A device used to separate airborne particles into different size fractions based on their aerodynamic diameter. It operates by accelerating an aerosol stream through a nozzle, causing larger particles to continue in a straight path while smaller particles follow the deflected air stream. Virtual impactors are employed in atmospheric research to collect size-segregated aerosol samples for chemical analysis.
