Wasatch wind

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003024

  1. A strong easterly wind blowing out of the mouths of the canyons of the Wasatch Mountains onto the plains of Utah. Also called canyon wind.

  2. Strong, gusty easterly winds that descend the western slopes of the Wasatch Range in Utah. These downslope winds occur when a high-pressure system is located over Wyoming or to the east, creating a strong east-to-west pressure gradient across the mountains. The air warms and dries as it descends, and wind speeds can exceed 100 miles per hour in constricted canyons.
