Water sky

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010115

A dark appearance of the sky over open water, observed from a snow-covered or ice-covered surface. This phenomenon occurs because the open water absorbs more sunlight than the surrounding snow or ice, leading to a darker reflection onto the cloud base or lower atmosphere. It is an indicator of open water for navigators in polar regions.
