West Wind Drift
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010205
The eastward-flowing ocean current that circles Antarctica, also known as the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Driven by the strong westerly winds in the Southern Ocean, it is the largest ocean current in the world, connecting the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. This current acts as a barrier, thermally isolating Antarctica from warmer waters to the north and influencing global climate.
