Correlation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000864

The process of demonstrating equivalency between rock units or geologic events in separate areas, such as between different wells. Geologists correlate strata using well logs, seismic data, and biostratigraphic markers to map the extent and geometry of reservoir, source, and seal rocks. A successful correlation establishes that the units are the same age (chronostratigraphic) or have the same physical properties (lithostratigraphic).
