Paleontology

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002685

The study of fossils to determine the age and depositional environment of sedimentary rocks. By identifying microfossils, such as foraminifera and pollens, within drill cuttings or core samples, geologists can correlate rock layers between different wells and construct a biostratigraphic framework. This analysis provides relative dating for rock sequences, which is then calibrated against absolute dates from radiometric dating methods to refine the geologic timescale.
