Correlate

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000863

To establish the equivalence of rock units or geologic events between separate locations, such as different wells or outcrops. Geologists correlate formations by matching characteristic patterns in well logs, identifying identical microfossils in cuttings, or comparing seismic reflection data across a survey area. This process builds a structural or stratigraphic framework that maps the continuity, thickness, and depth of reservoir, source, and seal rocks across a field or basin.
