Hopper
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001850
A funnel-shaped piece of equipment used to add powdered or granular materials, such as bentonite or barite, into the drilling fluid system. It uses the Venturi effect, where a high-velocity stream of liquid creates a low-pressure zone that draws the dry additives from the funnel into the fluid stream for rapid mixing. Hoppers are a standard component of a rig's mud mixing and conditioning system.
