The abbreviation for isopropyl alcohol, also called isopropanol or 2-propanol, a colourless, flammable, water-miscible solvent with the formula C3H8O. In mud laboratories it is used to clean glassware and viscometer parts and, blended with an aromatic solvent such as xylene, to dissolve oil-base mud samples for titration. Its closed-cup flash point is about 12 degrees C, so it is kept away from ignition sources.
