Peak shaving
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002725
The practice of reducing short-term high demand for natural gas, particularly during cold weather or other periods of maximum consumption. Gas utilities and pipeline operators manage these peaks by drawing from stored gas reserves, such as underground storage facilities or liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants, rather than increasing pipeline throughput. This strategy avoids the high costs of building pipeline capacity that would be underused for most of the year.
