Prehydrate
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002905
To mix bentonite or other polymers with fresh water to allow them to fully swell and yield before being added to a drilling fluid system with a high salt concentration. This process is necessary because high salinity inhibits the hydration and dispersion of these additives, reducing their effectiveness as viscosifiers or fluid-loss control agents. The prehydrated slurry is then added to the active mud system as a concentrated liquid.
