Fluid-loss additive
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001512
A substance added to drilling mud, cement slurry, or completion fluid to reduce the rate at which the liquid phase filters into the formation. These additives work by physically plugging the pore throats of the rock or by increasing the viscosity of the filtrate, forming a thin, low-permeability filter cake on the wellbore wall. Common examples include starches, polymers like carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), and polyanionic cellulose (PAC), with effectiveness measured by the American Petroleum Institute (API) fluid loss test.
