Redox
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003070
A type of chemical reaction involving the transfer of electrons between two species, short for reduction-oxidation. In drilling fluids, redox reactions are central to corrosion processes, where steel pipe loses electrons (oxidation) to an oxidizing agent in the mud. The potential for these reactions is managed by maintaining high pH with caustic soda and by adding oxygen scavengers to the fluid system.
