Reducing agent
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003072
A chemical substance that donates electrons to another reactant in a chemical reaction, causing the other reactant to be reduced while the reducing agent itself becomes oxidized. In enhanced oil recovery, reducing agents are sometimes injected into reservoirs to alter the oxidation state of crude oil components or reservoir minerals. Common examples include sulfites and hydrazine, used to scavenge oxygen or modify fluid properties.
