Spacing unit

A defined area of land, established by a regulatory body, that specifies the minimum acreage required for the efficient drainage of hydrocarbons by a single well. This unit prevents excessive drilling and protects correlative rights among mineral owners. Spacing units vary in size depending on the reservoir characteristics and state regulations, such as 40, 80, 160, or 640 acres.
