Zip groove
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-004205
A reduced-diameter section machined at the upper box end of a drill collar, usually a straight collar, so that open-and-close elevators can latch around the collar and lift it. Drill collars lack the tapered shoulder of a drill pipe tool joint, so the groove supplies a profile for the elevator to hold. The groove is cut only at the box end, which is the top of a collar standing in the derrick.
