Inert gas
Term · Additive manufacturing and 3D printing · MLC-T-ADM-000181
A gas, such as argon or nitrogen, that exhibits very low chemical reactivity under specific conditions. In metal additive manufacturing processes like powder bed fusion, a controlled atmosphere of inert gas is circulated within the build chamber to displace reactive gases like oxygen. This environment prevents the oxidation and contamination of the metal powder when it is melted by the laser or electron beam, preserving the part's intended mechanical properties.
